Safety and privacy

Who sees what, and what you can do about it.

Each wedding on Sparkle is its own private app. Here’s who sees what’s shared, what to do if something’s wrong, and how to leave, or delete your account or wedding, for couples choosing Sparkle and for their guests.

Who sees what

Shared with the wedding, as the couple choose

  • Kept within the wedding

Everything in a wedding stays in that wedding. A guest sees only the weddings they’ve joined from an invitation: there’s no feed, and no list of other couples’ days.

  • The link is the way in

Anyone with the couple’s invitation link or QR code can join their wedding, and so can anyone who scans the QR code on the photo wall’s screen. If a link gets out, the couple can replace it: the old one stops working at once. And they can take anyone who shouldn’t be there off the guest list.

  • The couple choose what guests see

Guests see the album and the guestbook or, if the couple choose, just a line for each, such as “David uploaded a photo”. The couple can hide any single photo or line from guests. A photo or voice note left with a guestbook line is only for the couple, their co-hosts and any guestbook helper they name.

  • Photos wait for approval

A guest’s photo waits for the couple, a co-host or a photo helper to approve it before other guests or the screen at the venue see it. Approval is on unless the couple switch it off. Guestbook lines and song requests go straight in.

  • Evening guests see their part

Guests invited to the evening see the parts of the day the couple open to them, and aren’t given a table. The photos and the guestbook are shared by everyone.

  • The screen at the venue

The venue’s photo wall shows approved photos (never who shared them) to anyone with its link. The couple can change or switch off that link at any time. A photo hidden from guests never reaches it.

When something’s wrong

Report it, block them, or have it taken down

  • Report it

Anyone at a wedding can report a photo, a guestbook line or a song request, or the person who shared it, and anything the couple put up: one of their pages or a photo on it, a message, or their cover photo. It leaves the reporter’s view at once and goes to the couple and to Sparkle. The couple aren’t told who reported it, and nor is the person who shared it.

  • Block someone

Block someone to stop seeing their photos, guestbook lines and song requests at that wedding. They aren’t told, and neither of you sees the other in Find each other. The screen at the venue is one for everyone, so a block doesn’t change it.

  • The couple and their helpers act

The couple, and any helper they name for photos, the guestbook or song requests, can hide or delete a photo or line, or remove a song request. The couple can also take a guest off the guest list, so they can’t open the wedding, even with the invite link.

  • Sparkle can step in

Every report reaches Sparkle too. If something breaks the law or our terms, we can remove it ourselves, or suspend or close the account that shared it. For anything you can’t report in the app, such as the order of the day, write to hello@sparkle.wedding.

Photos and location

Where you are is yours to share

  • No location in shared photos

Photos lose their location, and the names and serial numbers a camera writes into the file, before they leave a guest’s phone or browser. The couple’s cover photo and the photos on their pages go up without where they were taken, too.

  • Find each other, only if you tap

Where the couple add Find each other, you can tap to share where you are with the wedding’s guests and hosts, for up to two hours: it ends sooner when you stop, or ten minutes after you leave the app. Nobody’s location is shared unless they tap. The app only reads your location while it is open (never in the background).

Ages

13 to join, 18 to host

  • Guests are 13 or over

You must be 13 or over to join a wedding. Children under 13 don’t have accounts: whoever replies adds them to their party. Guests aged 13 to 17 get the same private settings as everyone: nothing is public, your location is never shared unless you tap to share it, and there are no ads or profiling.

  • Hosts, planners and buyers are 18 or over

To create a wedding, be a host or planner, or pay, you must be 18 or over. We don’t ask for your date of birth: the terms step says the age, and creating a wedding, joining as a host or paying asks you to confirm you’re 18 or over.

Your data

No adverts, and nothing sold

  • Only what a wedding needs

We collect what a wedding app needs to work. No adverts, no selling data, no tracking across other apps or sites, and no analytics tools yet.

  • Where it’s kept

Our servers are in the UK (Amazon Web Services, London region). A few services we rely on, such as push notifications and card payments, are run from the US.

  • Sparkle news, never to guests

Couples and planners may get Sparkle’s own news unless they say no: tick “Don’t send me Sparkle news and offers” when you create a wedding or pay, or later under “Emails from Sparkle” in the dashboard. Every news email has an unsubscribe link that works in one click. Guests never get marketing email from us.

  • Featured only if the couple say so

We show a wedding to other couples only if the couple tick a box for it: after the day, one box for each use, each withdrawn in one click. It covers the couple only: we ask anyone else in a photo ourselves, in writing, and never show children.

  • Why an email names Sparkle

An email about a wedding may end with a quiet line saying the couple are using Sparkle, so guests know which service the wedding runs on. It’s a service email: no offer, no tracking, no image.

Leaving and deleting

Leave, or delete your account or wedding, whenever you like

  • Leave a wedding

Anyone but its owner can leave a wedding: a guest from You in the app or at the foot of the page in a browser, a co-host or planner from Team in the dashboard. Your reply and seat go; your photos, guestbook lines and song requests stay for the couple and their guests.

  • Delete your account

Choose “Delete my account” in the app, under You, or in a browser, and your account and everything you added to any wedding go for good. If you co-host or plan a wedding, what you set up for it stays with the wedding: its order of the day, pages and messages. If you own a wedding, make a co-host its owner, or delete the wedding, first.

  • The couple delete the wedding

Whoever owns the wedding can delete it from the dashboard, and the guest list, replies, photos, the guestbook and the pages go for everyone within minutes. We keep only a record of what was bought, for our accounts, and our own copy of any report made there, for a year from when it was made. Our backups age out within 35 days.
